A modern-day Cinderella story with Mach & Mach

Founded by sisters Nina and Gvantsa Macharashvili, Mach & Mach is a glittering trove of all things glitz and glamour. The brand’s maxim is simple: more is more. In a high-shine meets high-fashion take on dressing up, Mach & Mach’s pieces take on an ethereal, princess-like playfulness. But this feminine opulence is always tempered by striking, masculine shapes. With shoes and bags designed in Georgia but made in Italy, we can’t help but wonder if all that glitters really is gold.

Harrolds caught up with the Mach & Mach’s Sister Act to talk ethos, the brand’s signature effervescence and some advice for budding designers seeking to forge new fairytales in fashion.

The main inspiration for the collection was Modern Cinderella

If Mach & Mach were a person, who would they be? What would they exude?

The main inspiration for the collection was Modern Cinderella. The aesthetics of fairytales, magic and femininity.

Where did you grow up? And how has it shaped the creative lens through which you see the world?

We grew up in Tbilisi, which is located between two very different European and Asian cultures. We’ve witnessed how they meet and intersect in everyday life, and it’s probably this vibrant environment that broadened the way we view the world today.

Where are you now? How does your location inspire you?

At this point, we are working on the new collection in Italy, which has become like a second (very welcoming) home to us and has been a huge inspiration with its surroundings.

Mach & Mach is known for its effervescence and glittery allure. What would you say the brand’s guiding ethos is?

Mach & Mach is associated with glittery and sparkly clothes and its main purpose is to bring freedom, happiness, and light from within, but the aesthetic of minimalism is always present.

Mach & Mach radiates disco, party, and panache. You’re heading out for the evening with little time to spare. What do you drape yourself in?

A sparkly blazer dress or pants.

Any advice for emerging designers in a 2020 context?

I think we are at the beginning of the new era, with a lot of good things to come for the emerging brands and designers. Try to be open-minded and open to change. And most importantly, be honest and authentic in what you do.

Where do you go or what do you do to reconnect with yourself and reboot your mind?

For us the space from which we draw inspiration is of utmost importance. The main source of our creativity and energy is nature.

Tell us about a favourite piece you designed recently and why it meant so much?

Almost every collection holds a certain message, especially Diamond of Elizabeth high heels, which was inspired by the royal jewels of the last centuries.

Whose opinion matters to you the most when you create? Why?

Generally, we are very different. But when we create, everything is about balance, and, probably, this is why we value each other’s opinion the most.
