5 Australian creatives on joy-making this Christmas

Christmas is within a string of tinsel’s reach. With festive dressing, wonder-worthy home styling and joy-spreading on Harrolds’ agenda, we turned to some of our most heralded local creatives and tastemakers to talk about the magic of that merry day.

Here, they share their plans for unwinding and reconnecting for the season of all that is bright. Wishlists at the ready. We’re divulging divine gifting ideas, reminiscing on Christmases past and looking longingly to the season of serendipity ahead.

We turned to some of our most heralded local creatives and tastemakers

Elliot Garnaut, Stylist

What things, people, food or fashion make your ultimate festive season?

For me, the festive season is about endless laughter with those close to me, like having family and best friends down to our family farm. Find us poolside with rosé-in-hand, blasting Fleetwood Mac as the sun goes down.

Most merry memory of a Christmas gone by?

I have been very fortunate to have spent many Christmases overseas. My first Christmas day in England will never be forgotten. It involved a morning dog walk in the Hampshire Countryside into a lunch with every single traditional trimming imaginable. We finished the day with games around the fireplace as it snowed outside. Picture book stuff!

What will this Christmas break (if you’re taking one) look like for you?

Connecting with friends interstate. Having had minimal opportunity to see them throughout this year, I envisage a frequent flying between Melbourne and Sydney to make up for lost time.

What’s on your Harrolds wish list this Chrissy?

You’re safe buying me anything from Bottega, Burberry or Vetements.

What things, people, food or fashion make your ultimate festive season?

Family, citrus, the colour blue of the ocean, friends, food, wine, vongole and oysters, lemons, bronzed skin, salty hair, open shirts and bra tops and strappy dresses and sandals.

Most merry memory of a Christmas gone by?

The more friends and family, the better. And always a sunny Aussie Christmas. The first Christmas with my son was definitely a standout as I finally felt the pleasure of building my own family.

What will this Christmas break (if you’re taking one) look like for you?

It will be filled with colour, seeing and marking art, relaxing and taking time off for the beach. I’ll be enjoying food with family and friends and having noise and children back in the house with my son returning home from his 6-month camping adventures. I can’t wait! It is, however, going to be very hard missing our London family this year. We’ll be seeing them as soon as we can.

What’s on your Harrolds wish list this Chrissy?

Something from Burberry or Bottega Veneta. And a pair of Amina Muaddi PVC heels, I’m obsessed!

What things, people, food or fashion make your ultimate festive season?

I love summer dresses and pool parties at Christmas time. I love entertaining at home and there is no better way to celebrate Christmas than with great food, champagne and fashion. I always look forward to buying a new outfit for Christmas, too.

Most merry memory of a Christmas gone by?

Being with my little girls Christmas morning and watching their sleepy eyes get wider as they are mesmerized by the magic that is the Big Day.

What will this Christmas break (if you’re taking one) look like for you?

I only close my studios for the public holidays, so when we can, we’ll have lots of beach time and lazy days enjoying the sun and time together as a family.

What’s on your Harrolds wish list this Chrissy?

Here we go: Balenciaga Pale Pink Hoodie, CIRE TRUDON Candle, Golden Goose High Top Sneakers and Bottega Jodie knotted strap bag.

Kathleen Buscema, Head of Buying at Harrolds

What things, people, food or fashion make your ultimate festive season?

Being brought up in an Italian family, food and family is very important. The menu would always consist of fresh seafood, lobster, crab, oysters and more. I think of my mum’s famous Pasta Marinara and her Pavlova, a chilled Rosé from Baie wines and John Lennons Happy Christmas (War is Over) playing in the background. Bliss.

Most merry memory of a Christmas gone by?

Hosting Christmas for the first time in our own home for our family and friends. My fiancé and I were so proud to do this for our family. It was relaxing, fun and really memorable.

What will this Christmas break (if you’re taking one) look like for you?

Well I am getting married in early January so I imagine it will be very busy putting together the final touches for the day!

What’s on your Harrolds wish list this Chrissy?

All things Bottega Veneta! For the home, Cire Trudon Candles are just the perfect gift and no table setting is complete without one. And to round it out, a Christopher Esber dress. They’re so effortless and perfect for the Australian summer day-to-night life.

What things, people, food, or fashion make your ultimate festive season?

After not going out and shopping less through COVID, this year, I’m looking forward to all of the above. My calendar is brimming with social events and I have a little collection of new pieces that I’ve been waiting to wear, as well as a few more on my wish list.

More than anything, my ultimate festive season means catching up with all the people I have missed these last many months.

Most merry memory of a Christmas gone by?

I adore Christmas. I love buying presents and spoiling the people I love and spending time with my kids, my parents and the rest of my family. My favourite memory is a tradition that stems from my childhood. A couple of days before Christmas, we head out on the farm with my dad and find our family Christmas tree for my parent’s home. Generally. it’s a semi-sparse, uniquely-shaped pine that grows naturally on their property. Chopping it down with an axe, we take it home and decorate it with homemade decorations, and lay plenty of presents beneath.

Although I have my own perfect Christmas tree at home in Melbourne, the memories of finding a tree with my dad will always make me smile. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without it!

What will this Christmas break (if you’re taking one) look like for you?

With the borders to NSW now open, we’re planning to take a couple of weeks away from the city and travel to my parent’s farm in the snowy mountains. It’s an off-the-grid retreat with minimal reception. (The closest supermarket is an hour’s drive through mountain country). It’s our chance to switch off, reset and spend time with family, bushwalking, playing board games and spotting emu chicks.

What’s on your Harrolds wish list this Chrissy?

The Christopher Esber Tank Dress, a knotted strap bag from Bottega Veneta, some Lido Woven Leather Sandals and a pair of dazzling Sarah and Sebastian earrings to complete the head-to-toe set.
