Trans-seasonal dressing, decoded
Layer by layer, let’s build an autumn-winter outfit with difference
3 Minute Read
It’s official: winter is coming. But we’re not hibernating. Here are some of Harrolds current must-haves for trans-seasonal dressing in style. Expect a guide to selecting the essentials (and the eccentric) this season, taking you from lightweight first layers to out-there knitwear for the layover between falling leaves and falling temperatures. Here’s how were getting dressed …
A guide to selecting the essentials
Minimal groundwork.
Begin your base with a handful of fitted tees, mesh tops, lush shirting and form-hugging longsleeves to commence layering. Futuristic style from Marine Serre reigns supreme this season, as well as edgy ruching from JW Anderson. Whatever your dressing prerogative is, a core top will set the tone.
Outerwear overhaul.
Before emerging from your warm abode, striking (but functional) outerwear is a must. Depending on the occasion, a put-together blazer from Alexander Wang could be your necessity, or perhaps a Saks Potts cobalt, longline trench iteration is all you need to elevate an everyday look.
A do-all dress.
Everyone needs a transitional day-to-night dress for autumn-winter, especially if you’re an Monday-Friday office operator. Wynn Hamlyn’s Black Keyhole Knit Dress embodies versatility and eternal elegance. Wear in the daylight with a cosy knit or chic blazer atop, then add heels and a pop of bright accessorisation to night-proof your look.
Denim for days.
Find a mix of denim top and bottoms to allow for texture-play and timeless ‘cool-girl’ style. Low-slung, relaxed fits are all the rage for autumn-winter ‘22. Throw boxy jackets over the foundations you’ve laid down underneath. A utilitarian-cool feeling emerges from pairing good, longwearing denim with basic, tonal monochrome, a chunky scarf and a ginormous pair of shades.
Warming knitwear.
Take your dresscode into the cooler climes with decadent knitwear made to brace that increasing winter chill. Find neutral knits to mingle well with every piece of outerwear in your wardrobe, or go for out-there tapestries to bulk up warmth (and brighten the gloomiest days). Spliced silhouettes from Wynn Hamlyn still remain a mainstay on our cosy-clothes rotation.
Statement accessories.
Bags, scarves, shades — you name it, we’re layering it. Having a spacious tote (to fit all those winter extras) is made possible by Alexander Wang, but we’re amplifying the sparkle factor tenfold. If you’re prone to all-black dressing when the thermometer drops, accessories and carry-ons are the best shortcuts to injecting drama, opulence or colour into your look. And is it really autumn-winter if you’re not draping yourself in Acne? These sumptuous scarves come in an array of warm hues to feel perfectly cushioned and cocooned in.
Finding your footing.
Maison Margiela’s Tabi boots make for easy, no-brainer footwear every winter, and this one’s no exception. A cream pair will go effortlessly with a tonal ensemble, or stand out against classic denim for effortless daytime outfitting. But if it’s drama you’re looking for in a shoe, may we point you in the direction of some Amina Muaddi crocodile, calf-crawling boots? Or perhaps Khaite’s Dallas Texas heels for a bit of western flair — a trend we’ve all noticed to be having a real moment in the fashionverse. To feel incredibly distinct, there’s no looking past Bottega’s Black Flame boots with a signature parakeet trim, or an incredibly edgy pair of Marine Serre’s signature moon boots.
