What makes a killer coat?

What makes a killer coat?

Saks Potts has become synonymous with playful outerwear, renowned for their ‘Foxy’ style of shearling-trimmed coats in all colours of the rainbow. The Copenhagen-based brand was founded in 2014 with a mission to reinvigorate cold-weather dressing, making it something vibrant and explorative — a far departure from our Melbourne winter outfitting norms.

The transformative power of an eccentric jacket

Harrolds has been the exclusive Australian stockist of this Copenhagen success for many years, connecting clients with the transformative power of an eccentric jacket. The hype surrounding each drop from Saks Potts is truly staggering, with their signature Foxy Coats becoming part of the fashion zeitgeist.

Fast forward to 2022 and Saks Potts now offers all the tops, bottoms and one-pieces one needs to style alongside a cornerstone outerwear piece. Quality and creativity have since become defining values of the globally-worn label, seen carried throughout their extended range of apparel offerings.

Founders Barbara Potts and Cathrine Saks are both still proudly at the design helm of the acclaimed label, now alongside the help of CEO Josefine Laigaard. Today, we catch up with Josefine to check in on Saks Pott’s current projects (both in and out of the studio), as well as the rationale behind their colourful beginnings.

We’re so honoured to have you here on The Journal. First off, whereabouts in the world are you right now, and what has the last week in Saks Potts’ head office entailed?

Thank you for including us on The Harrolds Journal. Right now, we are in Copenhagen prepping for a big campaign shoot that will be shot on several locations in the city — we can’t wait to share the pictures with you, and hope you will like them! Last week, the Saks Potts head office was turned into a big dinner party, as we were hosting the Global Fashion Summit dinner at our HQ, which is the leading international forum for sustainability in fashion.

What are the major trends or themes you’re noticing in Copenhagen’s fashion landscape currently?

After a long winter, it has finally begun to feel a bit like summer in Copenhagen, so there’s no doubt that the biggest trend is to show more skin-baring with your summer favourites. We currently love wearing the Henriette dress and the Snaketop on top of the Provence skirt. It is perfect for the weather here right now.

Rewinding to the origins of Saks Potts in 2014 as an outerwear label — why was the idea of nailing a flamboyant coat so important to you as designers?

In Copenhagen, winters are cold, dark and long. We kept noticing that everyone (including ourselves) were wearing dark colours throughout winter. We wanted to light up the streets with colours, to brighten up the everyday. Therefore, our outerwear always comes in bright colour options and rarely in black.

How is the Saks Potts coat evolving and remaining relevant in the 2022 woman’s wardrobe, worldwide?

We aim to create pieces that will be an everlasting favourite in women’s wardrobes. The cuts are sharp and timeless, and we believe that if you loved the colour of the coat you bought 10 years ago, you will still love it today.

When and why did you decide to introduce other apparel into the Saks Potts story? How do you distinguish your garments from other brands to remain unique?

Saks Potts has always been a personal reflection of our lives. We don’t think so much about how to be unique and what is the right thing to make for the brand, as we would then fear it would lose its soul. The important thing for us is to make garments that we like ourselves, and that they are a reflection of what’s on our mind at that moment. It’s important to stay true to yourself, and honest with your community.

How do you play of each other’s strengths and bolster each other’s weaknesses as co-designers of Saks Potts? In other words, what makes you a good team?

In the beginning, we did everything together, but have learned that it’s better to split things up sometimes. We know each other deeply and can easily take important decisions on behalf of each other because we know what the other would think and agree on.

Outside of work, where can we find each of you in your downtime (if there is any)?

We both live in the centre of Copenhagen and love spending time with our friends and family at home and all around the city. Barbara has a little baby daughter who is nine months old, and Cathrine will have a baby this summer, too, so our lives (outside of work) are also completely different to what it was just one year ago. But we truly appreciate this new chapter.

Lastly, what does your relationship with Harrolds Australia represent for the label? How important is it to you to find the right stockists for your infamous outerwear and chic apparel?

All the retailers we work with are carefully selected. We are very protective of our brand, and it means so much to us on a personal level. This makes it hard for us to find retailers who truly care about our brand and understand our vision.

We are really proud to be stocked at Harrolds, as we think you are a leading Australian luxury retailer and have been a long-lasting partner with us for many years now. We are placed exactly on the other site of the world from each other, but truly hope we can be able to visit you really soon and see the stores in real life.
